Buying guide
- Weight. Rackets are marked 3U, 4U and so on. A lighter 4U racket is quicker to swing and easier on the wrist, so many players start there.
- Balance. A head-heavy racket adds power to clears and smashes. A head-light racket is quicker in defence. A balanced racket suits most beginners.
- Strings. Check the maximum string tension printed on the frame and never go above it. Beginners are usually better off with a racket that already has strings fitted.
Common questions
Which badminton racket is best for a beginner?
A light, balanced racket with strings already fitted is a safe start. Avoid very stiff, head-heavy rackets until your technique is steady.
Should I buy a racket set or a single racket?
A set suits first-time casual play. If you plan to play regularly, a single better racket is usually the better value.
