Pressure Cookers Buying Advice

The right pressure cooker depends on how many people you cook for, what you cook on and how you plan to clean it. This page is buying advice. We add specific product picks only after reading the maker's own page.

Start with what you need

  • Family size. As a rough guide, about 2 to 3 litres suits one or two people, and about 5 litres suits a family of three to five. Check the maker's capacity note.
  • Material. Aluminium is light and heats quickly. Stainless steel is heavier, does not react with acidic food, and is easier to keep looking new.
  • Your stove. Check that the base suits your gas stove or induction cooktop. Not every cooker works on induction.
  • Lid type. Outer-lid and inner-lid cookers handle differently. Check how easy the lid is to open, close and clean.
  • Small kitchens. A smaller cooker, or one with a compact handle, is easier to store and carry.

Buying guide

  • Look at the safety features. Check for a safety valve, a gasket that is easy to replace and a clear maker's manual.
  • Check the spares. Gaskets and whistles wear out. Make sure replacements are easy to find.
  • Think about cleaning. Wide mouths and smooth insides are easier to wash.

Common questions

Stainless steel or aluminium pressure cooker?

Aluminium is lighter and heats quickly. Stainless steel is sturdier and does not react with acidic food, but it is heavier.

How do I choose the right size?

Pick by the number of people you cook for and the quantity you cook at once. A cooker should not be filled to the brim.
