Sun Care Buying Advice
The right sunscreen is the one you will actually wear every day. This page is buying advice. We add specific product picks only after reading the maker's own page.
Start with what you need
- SPF. SPF mainly shows protection from UVB rays. Many dermatologists suggest SPF 30 or higher for daily use.
- PA rating. PA+ to PA++++ shows UVA protection. More plus signs means stronger UVA protection.
- Skin type. Oily skin often prefers gel or fluid textures. Dry skin often prefers creamier ones. Sensitive skin may prefer fragrance-free options.
- Texture and white cast. Some sunscreens leave a pale cast on deeper skin tones. Read reviews from people with a similar skin tone.
- Outdoor or daily use. For long hours outdoors, look for water-resistant products and reapply as directed on the pack.
Buying guide
- Read SPF and PA together. Look for both an SPF and a PA rating on the pack.
- Choose a texture you like. A sunscreen you enjoy wearing is one you will use every day.
- Reapply. Follow the maker's directions, which usually suggest reapplying after a couple of hours outdoors or after sweating or swimming.

Common questions
Do I need sunscreen indoors?
Light from windows can still reach you. Many people wear sunscreen daily if they sit near windows or step outside often.
How much sunscreen should I use?
Use the amount the maker recommends. Using too little gives less protection than the number on the pack.
